Why Sewing is Becoming Trendy Again

Why Sewing is Becoming Trendy Again

They say there’s nothing new under the sun. And it’s pretty much true; there are new versions of some things, but most everything is recycled, and everything that’s popular now has been popular at other times in history. However, each thing that comes back into popularity is new to the current generation, so in essence, it is new for those within certain age groups. And usually when something comes back, it’s for a good reason—because it’s a good thing!

Well, in case you hadn’t noticed, the world of sewing is one of those things that has become popular and trendy again, especially in certain circles and age groups. (But the fact is, it never really went out of style! Shh…don’t tell.) But thanks to Internet inventions of recent years, the world of sewing has many elements to it that your grandma could never have imagined. Let’s take a look at a few of the reasons why sewing has become trendy again.

Pinterest

Pinterest could very well be one of the biggest and most effective reasons why sewing has become trendy again. If you’ve ever gone on Pinterest for a recipe or a DIY project, you know that you can find a million and one ideas that you immediately want to try. Well, the same goes for sewing ideas on there…you can find just about anything you’d like, from patterns and ideas to tutorials and how-tos. And when you look for one thing, you find tons, so you’ll never run out of ideas!

Instagram

Instagram is another site that allows sewing lovers to post and share their projects, and followers can easily see photos and find links to tutorials or directions. Similar to Pinterest, users can search for ideas and find many, many more to add to their list of projects! Hashtags help you find exactly what you’re looking for, sorting posts into categories for you. Or when you come across a person or a company whose ideas you love all of, follow them and you’ll see anything new they post. Before you know it, you’ll have many projects to keep you busy and you’ll have to post your versions on your own Instagram.

YouTube

YouTube, of course, has everything. So it’s no surprise that you can find sewing tutorials on there! But don’t forget the sewing classes, projects, and lessons that can easily be found on YouTube as well. Many vloggers post consistently on their channels, so it’s a good idea to find one you like and subscribe. Maybe you’re working on a project and need to learn how to sew a zipper—or you’ve nearly completed that top but you just can’t quite figure out the collar. Or perhaps your sewing machine is acting up and it needs some tweaking. Chances are very good that you’ll find a video on your specific problem, so search away! There’s nothing you can’t find on YouTube, and like Pinterest, one video idea will lead to others, so expect to spend some time finding good content.

Blogs

Sewing blogs are another thing that has exploded in popularity in recent years. Many bloggers inspire aspiring sewists by posting photos and instructions for projects on their sites, and when visitors see the finished product, they want to make their own version. Sometimes the bloggers model the handmade clothing themselves or on their children, and the personal touches help to inspire readers; after all, it always looks better on a person than a mannequin or a drawing on the front of a pattern. The best way to get inspired is to see the finished project, and you can’t go wrong with step-by-step instructions! Most bloggers link to their Pinterest/Instagram/Facebook or other social media, too, so it makes it easy to find all of their content.

Other Reasons

Yes, the Internet has played a major part in the re-emergence of sewing amongst even the millennial generation these days. But that can’t be the only factor. And it’s definitely not; there are several others that take part in making sewing cool again.

  • Exercising creativity
  • Satisfaction and fulfillment
  • Eco-conscious and saves money
  • DIYers
  • Project Runway

There’s something to be said for having a creative outlet, and sewing is a great way to exercise creative abilities. If you’re just starting out, you’ll surely find that sewing is fun and a great escape—and you’ll have something to show for it! Which leads to the mention of the elements of satisfaction and fulfillment. Who out there hasn’t seen a project (of any kind) through to completion, taken a step back, and smiled? Finishing a sewing project helps you to accomplish a goal, and that’s a really great feeling. Just think of showing your completed project to a friend or family member—and be proud of your efforts!

You also may have noticed that there are many DIYers out there these days—those who love to create something on their own or upcycle/repurpose other items. No longer does “homemade” have a negative connotation; there are tons of bloggers and vloggers out there with amazing DIY projects that are envy-inducing, often rivaling or far surpassing store-bought items! And many self-starter types are constantly looking for a project to get their hands on, so sewing is the perfect outlet for that. On top of that, sewing your own clothes (and other items) is eco-conscious and saves money. Every time you sew something yourself, that’s one less item you’re purchasing from a large retailer that potentially hired sweat-shop workers to make it. You can also pick your own fabrics, so you can know exactly where they came from and what they’re made of. And the final element that has inspired sewing in many a viewer: Project Runway! Who could watch that show and not have at least a small desire to try making something yourself?

With all the options and inspiration available today, it’s no wonder that sewing has made a dramatic comeback. After all, clothing is probably the most commonly sewn item, and wearing clothing will never go out of style! (Presumably.) If you haven’t started sewing but want to learn, there is no better time than the present.
